Ruvanee Pietersz Vilhauer is a psychologist by profession with a PhD from the University of Chicago. Prior to her current position at New York University, she worked as a science writer for NASA, a biology researcher, and a prison therapist. Vilhaeur won the Commonwealth Short Story Competition in 2004 and the Iowa Short Fiction Award in 2018. Her work has been broadcast on BBC Radio 4 and published in numerous literary journals, including the Kenyon Review and the American Literary Review. A native of Sri Lanka, Vilhaeur lived in India, Thailand, Canada, and Australia before coming to the United States. Her first novel, The Mask Collectors, was called “a smart, visceral, debut thriller” by Library Journal. Her debut collection, The Water Diviner and Other Stories, examines the Sri Lankan immigrant experience through a wide range of characters.
