Chaya Bhuvaneswar is a physician, poet, and fiction writer whose work explores sexual violence alongside Hindu myth and history. Her prose has appeared in Narrative Magazine, Tin House, Electric Lit, The Millions, Joyland, and Michigan Quarterly Review, and her poetry in Indolent Books, Quiddity, Natural Bridge, Ithaca Lit, apt magazine, and Hobart. Her first book, White Dancing Elephants, esteemed by Kirkus Reviews as “stunning, evocative, electric,” is a short story collection spotlighting women as they face sexual harassment and racial marginalization. Hailed by Elle as an “evocative new voice in feminist fiction,” Bhuvaneswar is a public speaker on social justice and trauma recovery. She has earned a Henfield writing award and a Rhodes scholarship, and White Dancing Elephants won Dzanc Books’ 2017 Short Story Collection Prize. She is a four-time Pushcart Prize nominee.
