Abdi Nor Iftin is a memorist and former correspondent for NPR. He is the author of Call Me American, a memoir detailing his childhood in Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia, until he was granted a visa to live in the United States. In 2015, Iftin was the subject of This American Life, a public radio program and podcast which followed his journey as a Somali refugee in Kenya after secretly posting dispatches to NPR. Currently, he lives in Portland, Maine working as an interpreter for Somali immigrants and playing on a local soccer team. He studies political science at the University of Southern Maine. Call Me American is Iftin’s debut book, which Booklist called “an essential immigrant story, one that is enlightening and immediate.”
